Thursday September 28 2006: The University’s Senior Management Board has proposed that the Department of Physics recruit no further students after the present year’s intake in October 2006. It is recommended that the Department closes no later than July 2010. The interests of existing physics students and staff will be a priority during this period. The University regrets having to make this recommendation. It follows an extensive process of review, which concluded that in order to maintain and build on our academic strength in the Department of Physics, we would need to invest in a way which is not feasible in the present climate. In the current funding context, Reading, like many institutions, has to direct its limited resources to academic areas of comparative strength.
I caught a bit of an old Labour party speech from the 1960s on BBC Parliment the other day on the 'White Heat of Technology'. Even back then, it was clear to some that the future prosperity of the UK was based on science and technology, with a skilled and educated population being key to that.
Its seems that we are heading in the reverse direction. My solution, big GRANTS and no-fees for certian courses.....far to radical and unfree market a solution for the CURRENT Labour government.

UPDATE It is not the IDF but the ISraeli border police (border police have guns and shot people...something you forget when you live in a country which have border police that tend to look like primary school teachers and are armed at worse with a wardrobe made up of brown cardigans!) The camera crew that were recording it are an Israeli organisation re peace and record such events. i dont knwo if this makes things better or worse regarding the actions of these police officers (and I am glad I dont have that job) but it is still not very nice.
I would never have thought any sane person would think that a couple kissing (peck/ resting head on shoulder, not full on) on a plane was SUCH a threat that not only would they should stop, but that if they didnt not stop flight would be diverted. Of course, it has nothing to do with the fact that the couple was gay, right?

We know that’s crazy because President Bush is NOT crazy and President Bush knows that when the rapture happens our fillings and corrective lenses and earrings will fall on the ground and our physical bodies will rise up to heaven to live forever. Once in heaven, according to a poll I saw recently, 60% of Americans believe they will be issued harps. No joke. Actual harps. I don’t know if crazy Iranian Presidents get harps, but I’m thinking not, since not even an angel wants to hear a crazy guy play the harp.

An excellent article that does something that none of our elected 'leaders' have the willingness to grasp. But then, they want an 'endless war' so they can do whatever they want in the war on 'terror'.
